- TO PROMOTE LITERACY
by Rani Chitrakar
-
Listen to this story about the illiterates.
- Illiterate people live in darkness, we need to have light.
If a person remains illiterate, life
- is like death.
-
People who do not know how to read and
- write suffer a lot. A man might take a letter to a babu
[important man] who says, "I don't
- have time to read it." When a couple has a girl,
they do not send her to school because they
- think she will go to another family. And when that girl
married into another family, she has to
- suffer a lot. Aren't her mother and father afraid of that?
-
Naren's son was sick and he bought the
- medicine the doctor prescribed. He put the medicine next
to some poison and thinking he
- was giving his son medicine, gave him poison. His son
swallowed it and died.
-
We need education. Vidyasagar, Kudiram,
- and Matangini Hazra were not afraid of anything, they
went forward in everything.
-
People who are educated can help people.
-
But without any learning, people become bad.
- They torture women, become thieves, drink alcohol.
-
When a person is illiterate, he cannot keep his
- land. Rich people take everything away from us.
-
Kalidas was illiterate. Then he received a
- boon from the Goddess Saraswati and became a pandit.
-
That's why I am saying that everyone in
- every family should study.
