- EVILS OF CINEMA by Shyamsundar Chitrakar
-
After 1947 Bharat [India] became independent.
- We thought we would live in peace and not have any pain
or suffering.
-
But what happened? People didn't have food
- and clothes and they had to go and touch the feet of the
babu who is the food committee
- member. They would go in groups, touch his feet, and say
"We want a little bit of rice
and food. We have lots of grandchildren at home."
-
"My daughter-in-law has no clothes and
- has to stay in the kitchen that is why we have to touch
your feet."
-
And
all the young women wear shoes and glasses
- and go to see films. Some women go with their grandsons.
They laugh and do not dress
- properly. They do not cover their heads with their saris.
-
Some go by rickshaw, some go by bullock cart.
-
Its even hard to keep old
- women, from 40 to 60 years, at home.
-
Even the woman who has five sons tells her
- husband, "I won't stay with you, you can't buy me
perfume and all these things."
- She says, "I will go to my father's place and marry
another man."
-
Some women fight with their in-laws. This
- fight occurred because the daughter-in-law would not work
the dhenki. The father-in-law
- criticized his daughter-in-law. Then the son beat the
father and made him touch the
- daughter-in-law's feet and ask her forgiveness. The old
man was ashamed and hung
- himself. After Independence fathers and sons fight in
every house and men are
- hanging themselves.
-
In court there are many cases about
- women and even the judge is a woman. This is the end of
the tale of independence.
