Top Scorers Collide
Hockey fans who traveled to the Campus Center Rink on the SUNY Oswego Campus got a special treat recently when two of the top ten scorers in the ACHA were on the ice during the same game when Mercyhurst traveled to Oswego for a game with the men's club ice hockey team at SUNY Oswego.
Ryan Hawthorne of Oswego and Matt Warren of Mercyhurst are both one of the top ten scorers in the nation - Hawthorne is #4 and Warren is #2- in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) which the national league for college ice hockey club teams. Mercyhurst is also ranked #25 in the league which also consists of such hockey powerhouses as Penn State, Liberty and Kent State.
The game was exciting as Oswego rallied from a 2 goal deficit to tie the game in the second period. Mercyhurst then scored 3 and Oswego battled back with 2 goals to trail by one with 14 seconds left in the third period. The tying goal was halfway over the line but the buzzer sounded to end the game with Oswego being defeated by 5 - 4. The Mercyhurst coaching staff commented on how impressed they were with the quality of players on the Oswego team especially since the Oswego team has only been in existence for 4 years.
