The Oswego State Men's Club hockey team split a pair of games with Rutgers University recently. Game 1 of the 2 game series was won by Oswego, 6-5, in thrilling fashion with a sudden death overtime win. Scoring goals for the Lakers were Ryan Hawthorne (Baldwinsville) (2), Tim Rinck (2), and Dustin Kennedy (Oswego Admirals) (1). Credited with assists were Jamie Shutts (Fulton) (2), Brad Kervin (Queensbury) (1) - his first college point, Jake Weimer and Jim LaPaglia. Jamie Shutts scored the game winning goal with 44 seconds into overtime. Goalie Greg Feiden was busy in the net with 51 saves. The Lakers outshot Rutgers 68-51.
The next afternoon the teams faced off again with Rutgers defeating the Lakers 5-1. This was the first loss for the Lakers this season. Scoring for Oswego was senior assistant captain Ryan Hawthorne assisted by Jamie Shutts and Greg Distin, both of Fulton. Laker goalie Mike Whittaker (Cortland) had 35 saves in the net.
Head coach of the Lakers is Jay Peacock from Mexico.
Several local players have achieved national ranking this week in the ACHA. Ryan Hawthorne is 4th nationally for total points and 1st in goal scored. Jamie Shutts is 6th in points and 5th in assists. This is quite an achievement as all of the ACHA teams from around the country include their statistics for this ranking.
The next game for Oswego is Saturday, Oct. 20 vs. Mercyhurst at 7:00 at the Campus Center Rink. The following day the Lakers travel to Cazenovia College for a non league game. Admission is always free to the games.
