The Oswego State Club team has just completed their first weekend of their regular season and they're off to a phenomenal start. In their preseason the team scrimaged against the Upstate Medical Pediatrics Department team to raise money for both the Pediatrics department and the Golisano Children's Hospital at Upstate in Syracuse, NY. Spirits were high as Oswego State students and residents from the area filed into the arena to watch two teams battle it out. Although the teams battled hard, the atmosphere was light as the players joked and laughed throughout the game. At the end of the night the game raised a total of $480, a resounding success.
For their first weekend in the regular season Oswego faced off in a home-and-home series against the Syracuse Orangemen. Friday nights game in Syracuse proved a fiesty contest. As the hit count soared so did the pace of the game. The Orangemen started off with a quick goal in the first period on a powerplay, but Oswego quickly evened it up and didn't look back. Led by Ryan Hawthorne and Jake Wiemer the Lakers soared back to a 4-1 lead and held on to win 4-2.
Saturday Oswego played their home opener against an SU team looking for revenge from the previous night. Backstopped by goalie Mike Whittaker, the Lakers fought a tight game the whole way through. Ryan Hawthorne scored a hat trick, his first of the year, to lead Oswego to a 3-2 victory, sweeping the Orangemen. The game was capped off by a resounding tossing of oranges onto the ice by Oswego fans, a tribute to the outstanding performance over the weekend.
