Structure Contour Field Exercise using
Electrical Resitivity Data
Lab Final Examination
Date for a structure field
project is provided including an incomplete geological map, an incomplete data
table, one well-log, and one piece of visual information. Your job as a structural geologist is to
generate a professional structural assessment of the region of interest using
all techniques or resources available. The
assessment report MUST include: a
completed geological map, at least one geological cross section, interpreted stereograms, and a title page, two page summary
(double-spaced, 12 pt, Times Roman, one inch margins), reference page, plus all
work products for the assessment in an appendix. How you do this project is up to you, however
it will be evaluated as a professional-level structural assessment. Look at the data available and use all
possible resources.
Once you have done the first
draft on the assessment using the data that is available, you can then petition
the Technical Manager (me) for more data. Everyone is allocated $600,000 (Structure-bucks)
to purchase more data. The data that is
available can be found in a list within the Excel data file. It is important that you spend your Structure-bucks
wisely and effectively. As well, it is
very important that you spend all of the allocated resources to complete your
project. There will be no sharing of
data and absolutely no collaboration. If
a classmate approaches you and talks about this project, you are obligated to
inform the Technical Manager immediately, or both parties will be implicated
for insider-data-exchange. If that
occurs, then both parties will be sent to the Regional Manager (the Chair) and
the company CEO (the Dean) to explain the collaboration and you will be fired
(automatic grade of "E" for the entire course).
Writing Policy
When
writing the term paper for this course, you must comply with good writing
practices. Read the following statements
and bring questions to me so we can discuss them in-class or one-on-one.
STATEMENT CONCERNING PLAGIARISM
The act of taking published
material or ideas and submitting them for written assignments is plagiarism,
and a serious academic offense. During this assignment you will be required to
write about technical subjects in geology. It is important that ALL written
material is your own writing and not copied or paraphrased from published literature
of any source. If you submit written material that contain plagiarized
material, you will immediately receive a failing grade for the entire course
(not just the assignment) and your name will be submitted to the Dean for
disciplinary action. Plagiarism is a very serious issue that can lead to very
serious consequences besides failing a course. If you have questions about this
policy please submit them to me for clarification. Please refer to your Student
Handbook and the Undergraduate Catalog in addition to asking me for
clarification.
STATEMENT CONCERNING USING DIRECTLY QUOTED MATERIAL
Although you may be
instructed to use directly quoted material (with proper references) in other
college classes, the writing you do for this assignment with not contain any
material that is directly quoted from other sources, even with proper
references. The act of using direct quotes in essays and papers in NOT
considered plagiarism. However, there is very little science literature that is
so well written that it is worthy of direct quotation. Utilization of published
figures (maps, photos, graphs, charts) is permitted and encouraged because that
constitutes data that you will need for the assignment. So, when constructing
the written material for this assignment, make sure that every written word is
your own. If you have questions about this policy please submit them to me.
Directly quoted accounts of first hand accounts of geological events (such as
earthquakes) are permitted, but must be followed with analysis and not used
extensively.
STATEMENT CONCERNING PARAPHRASED MATERIAL
You are not permitted to
paraphrase published work in this assignment. Every written word should be your
own. If a piece of information is sufficiently important to include in part of
the term project, then read it, understand it, integrate it with other sources,
and then write about it with proper references. Assignments that contain
paraphrased material will receive zero credit.
