ICD-10 for Existing Coding Professionals

SUNY Oswego's CODESMARTTM Program provides a dynamic on-line training program that teaches current medical coding professionals to be proficient with using the new ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems. With the successful completion of this program, the individual will gain new knowledge and enhance their skill sets to be well prepared to pass the certification exams through the American Coding Quality Association (ACQA).

The curriculum includes:

Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology

This course provides students an in-depth understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Biological principles and the structural and functional relationships among organ system are discussed. Students will review medical terminology as it relates to each body system.

Pharmacology

This course will familiarize students with drug classifications, schedules, prescription abbreviations, the metric system, and dosage conversions. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the body systems and the nature of the drugs that treat the diseases and conditions of the system.

Pathophysiology

In this course the student will study the etiology of disease. The student will develop an understanding related to conditions and disorders, signs and symptoms, patient screening, etiology, diagnostic assessment and clinical tests, treatment options, prognosis, prevention, and patient teaching.

ICD-10-CM

This course provides an in-depth study of the medical coding and billing practices used in general medical practice. Students will develop an understanding of the new ICD-10-CM code structure and demonstrate accuracy in using the diagnostic coding system.

ICD-10-PCS

The course will focus on medical coding and billing for a hospital setting.
