CLEP exams enable you to earn college credit for knowledge you already have ... knowledge that you may have acquired through independent study, prior course work, professional development, on-the-job training, cultural pursuits or in some other manner.
CLEP exams, produced by the College Board, are available in 33 subject areas. CLEP General Examinations may be used for elective credit. Subject Examinations are suitable for meeting some General Education requirements. Each exam is worth between 3 and 12 credits.
CLEP exams are administered by the Office of Extended Learning and are given at our Phoenix Center.
A registration booklet with basic CLEP information, including the Registration-Admission Form, is available at the Extended Learning Office, located in the Campus Center, Room 151. You may either stop by and pick one up or call us at 315.312.2270 and we will be happy to mail it to you.
Registering for CLEP
The registration booklet provides the basic CLEP information you need (i.e. the Registration-Admission Form, and how to order an Official Study Guide). Complete all applicable parts of the Registration form, according to the instructions and send with appropriate payment to Division of Extended Learning, 151 Campus Center, Oswego, NY 13126.
Registration Fees
When submitting your Registration-Admission form, please be sure to include two separate payments, per test, in order for your application to be processed.

One $80.00 check or money order payable to CLEP. Credit card payments may be made on the test date for this fee only (No cash, please).

One $25.00 check or money order payable to SUNY Oswego CLEP (No cash or credit cards please).
The Registration-Admission form and the payment to SUNY Oswego CLEP should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the desired test date. The CLEP test fee can be paid at the time of the test. When you return the form, be sure to include a second choice of a testing date in case you cannot be accommodated at the date and time of your first choice.

If you are matriculated at SUNY Oswego and intend to have the score sent to SUNY Oswego, you must file an OFF-CAMPUS STUDY APPROVAL FORM, prior to taking the CLEP examination in order to ensure you will receive credit as expected.
