How are you using technology in your job?
Perhaps the question could be - when don't I use technology? Technology is interwoven with every part of my job. I usually have 3-4 Internet browsers open on both Macintosh and Windows computers to test and update our web site pages. I use our content management system to assist other editors and to trouble shoot problems that occur. I develop training materials using software (Word, Acrobat, & photo editing) making sure they are accessible to our visual, motor or hearing impaired users.
In what way has technology transformed your job?
In the early days of the World Wide Web, only people with HTML experience created and edited web pages. Today technology allows virtually anyone to create and update web pages, produce blogs and share photos. So instead of building web pages, I'm now supporting people who create and edit their own pages.
How do you see technology improving learning?
I recently ran across an article that lists the 100 top learning tools. I use many of these tools every day. Google docs, Google calendars, Twitter, Delicious, and Facebook are all good ways to share information.
In what ways do you find technology frustrating?
Like anyone, I become frustrated when software does not work as advertised. A good example of this is when our content management system was upgraded in May 2008. There were many 'bugs' that the vender had to fix.
How are you using technology in interesting or unique ways?
I was recently introduced to mind-mapping software. It's collaborative software that enables a project team to brainstorm and share ideas in a visual manner.
How are you using technology to develop and deliver staff development?
If you're one of our 250 content editors on campus, you are familiar with the many classes we offer. We use a hands-on approach to teach others how to use OmniUpdate. Each session includes plenty of time for practice. Last year we presented seminars to over 270 people. For the spring '09 semester we will be offering 10 to 12 separate training sessions for both new and advanced users. Watch for the list on the CTS web site.
How are you applying technology in your personal life?
I develop and edit small business websites and find my cell phone is indispensible. I also enjoy taking digital photos, especially of my grandchildren. My grandchildren introduced me to the Wii ... I could easily become addicted.
Is there a single technological item you can't imagine living without?
Life without a computer would be very hard to imagine. It's such an integral part of both my professional and personal life.
Is there a particular technological item that you plan on learning and/or purchasing in the near future?
In between other projects, I'm attempting to improve my Flash skills. I'd also like to replace my home computer - it's over 5 years old.
