How are you using technology in the classroom?
We use technology in class to show examples of important computer science concepts in action. For example, in CSC 212, we often write Java programs and experiment with different inputs, conditions, etc. to see what happens.
How do you integrate technology into your courses?
Students in my classes are extremely tech-savvy and therefore expect technology to be highly integrated. I use the Angel course management system extensively to share resources, provide discussion forums, and give students a way to turn-in assignments on-line.
How do you see technology improving learning?
Technology can improve learning if it engages students more effectively than traditional methods. I am starting a program this semester where we will use technology to distribute "learner-centered content", i.e. presentations of topics developed for specific learning preferences. We will present topics in a variety of digital formats (audio podcasts, Adobe Flash movies, etc.) giving students the ability to choose the format that they find most helpful and informative.
How have your students responded to your use of technology?
Well, last semester was my first at SUNY Oswego, so I don't have a lot of data. However, the initial responses were extremely positive. I believe that these are a good indication that I'm on the right track.
What does technology add that would not be possible without it?
Technology adds immediacy. Quite simply, it allows students to see concepts in action. Even just a few years ago when I was in school, we couldn't actually see programs run until we left the lecture hall and tried things out in the lab. This immediacy provides more impact.
What new goals do you have for using technology in teaching?
As mentioned above, we'll be using technology to provide a more personalized learning experience for our students. The project would not be feasible without the available technologies to create and distribute this new content.
What is your biggest challenge in using technology in the classroom?
As useful as technology can be in class, it can also be a distraction. I think it's best used as a platform for demonstration and to stimulate discussion. Students can loose interest when technology is overused, so it's best administered in small doses. Students can also distract themselves when they bring a laptop and surf the web or IM during class. In either case, the challenge is not to let technology encroach on the primary purpose of assembling in class -- to exchange ideas.
How could the University better facilitate the use of technology in the classroom?
Overall, I think the university is doing an outstanding job of making technology available. I have recently seen demonstrations of "clicker" systems that allow students participate in real-time surveys in class. These would be a nice addition.
Are you using technology in any interesting or unique ways?
Well, I hope so! As mentioned previously, we're trying to use technology to better engage students individually, and I think that is unique.
Is there anything in particular that you love (or hate) about technology?
Naturally, as a computer scientist, I think that technology has become an integral part of our civilization and culture. Some may (rightfully) argue that we are too reliant. However, I have confidence that we will achieve an appropriate balance by openly discussing and debating its approriatness.
How are you using technology in your daily life?
Communications technology is a very important part of my daily life. Using e-mail to communicate with colleagues, friends, and family is one example. I also make extensive use of on-line library resources for keeping up with research.
If you had to pick one technology item that you couldn't live without, what would it be?
