How are you using technology in the classroom?
Teaching how to do the various media right means that the instructor must have all the media being discussed and be able to get quickly and smoothly from one source to another. There are very few of my classes where the video projector, Elmo, and Power Point material from a flash drive are not used.
How do you integrate technology into the classroom?
I use live radio and TV sources, DVDs, CDs, Internet web sites, and pre-produced student video materials as examples of successful and unsuccessful programming. Most of my live guest speakers from radio and TV stations bring a laptop loaded with items to show with their talks.
How are you using technology as a tool to achieving your teaching goals?
I have used Course Space and e-mail to get late breaking “HOT Topics” and assignments to my students and to receive creative materials from students. Technology can make classes more interactive and interesting.
How do you see technology improving learning?
In programming and sales, technology empowers instructors to show how something is done rather than trying to describe how it is done. Many of us learn best with a template. Technology lets us “show”.
How have your students responded to your use of technology?
They expect state-of-the-art technology used strategically, but that does not mean that they want me blasting them with 55 minutes of rapid fire Power Points.
What does technology add that would not be possible without it?
It gives the class an experience of being in the middle of the new digital media marketplace – not talking about something without experiencing it.
What new goals do you have for using technology in teaching?
I’m about to begin use of the exciting new Angel software for assignments, HOT Topics documents, group work by students outside of class, and messaging the class as a whole and privately as individuals.
How could the University better facilitate the use of technology in instruction?
Replace the old Elmo paper displays that require 16 font type to be legible to students.
What is your biggest challenge in using technology in the classroom?
Having time to investigate all the varied sources of multimedia content I could use in class!
How are you using technology to transform your teaching?
To me, interacting with students is the most important part of teaching. Technology adds a convenient new dimension to teaching. If a student has a question any time of the day or night, they simply e-mail me and have an answer back very quickly. Group projects on Angel will let them put what they have learned into action, a great way to learn.
How are you using technology in interesting or unique ways?
I use the telephone conferencing system for occasional guest speakers who are not able to come to Oswego, and I use video satellite feeds from sources such as the National Association of Television Program Executives and the Paley Center for Media.
Is there anything that you love about technology?
I love the outstanding help we get from Bob, Justin, Bill, and the other people who are always 30 seconds away with technical help when we need it. With their help, the technology always works … priceless!
How are you using technology in your daily life?
E-Mail for keeping up with friends everywhere, DVRs to catch that breaking media story my students will love, and videos for experiencing the latest triumphs by my five grandchildren.
If you had to pick one technology item that you couldn’t live without what would it be?
It would have to be the Internet and email. No better way to stay in touch with everybody and everything 24/7.
