How are you using technology in your job?

Like most staff, I rely heavily on the basics for communication and organization: email, calendar, and office-oriented software. I also use a wide range of specialized software for troubleshooting all sorts of technology-related issues; far too numerous to list.

In what way has technology transformed your job?

That's backwards, as far as I'm concerned. My job transforms... and is redefined...  every time technology changes.  New technology always opens fresh avenues of exploration (and frustration).

What does technology add that would not be possible without it?

Technology helps us accomplish things more efficiently in less time. There are always exceptions to this, however. For example, I can accomplish a particular task in Windows XP using only three mouse-clicks... whereas the same task in Vista requires eight. Does technology automatically equal "progress"? Not according to my cramped fingers!

How do you see technology improving learning?

Technology should augment what's hopefully already there: a sincere desire to learn. If you aren't personally invested in learning new things, technology isn't going to pull your weight. It's purpose is to make the load bearable, not to remove it completely.

In what ways do you find technology frustrating?

This is meant to be an article, so I'll pass. Those curious can buy my book (someday).

How are you using technology to develop and deliver staff development?

I teach a variety of workshops each semester for CTS in the Advanced Technology Classrooms. Of course, training our student staff for help desk duties requires a wide range of audiovisual and computer technologies. In short, the ATCs are indispensable! We're also exploring the possibilities of using Remote Assistance technology to help staff solve their computer issues without having to actually visit their offices. We get an overwhelmingly positive response whenever we mention that possibility.

Is there a single technological  item you can't imagine living without?

Since I'm a movie buff, I'd have to go with my DVD player. However, if I had the funds for an Amazon Kindle device, I'd imagine that would quickly consume my spare time.

Is there a particular technological item that you plan on learning  and/or purchasing in the near future?

My fiancee is begging me for a Nintendo Wii this holiday season. We'll see what Santa can do.
