Locating mail files for backup

Microsoft Outlook

Outlook mail is usually stored at one of the following paths:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Profile name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Profile name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

Outlook mail files carry the file extension *.pst. The .pst file contains all of your local Outlook folders, such as Calendar, Inbox, Tasks, Sent Items, Outbox, Deleted Items, and user-created folders.

Mozilla

Mozilla mail is usually stored at the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Profile name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\<gibberish>.slt\

If you set up Mozilla using IMAP per our recommendations, the mail index files are stored in the IMAPMail subfolder, which is not neccessary to keep. If you are using POP3 for mail, or if you have stored mail in local folders on your hard drive, it will be located within the Mail subfolder.

Thunderbird

Thunderbird mail is usually stored at the following path:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Profile name>\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\<gibberish>.default\

If you set up Thunderbird using IMAP per our recommendations, the mail index files are stored in the IMAPMail subfolder, which is not neccessary to keep. If you are using POP3 for mail, or if you have stored mail in local folders on your hard drive, it will be located within the Mail subfolder.
