Backup Howto - Floppy Disks
Procedures for backup via floppy disks

Storage capacity

High-density floppy disks are capable of storing approximately 1.3 megabytes of data. While suitable for quick incremental backups of smaller files, they are highly impractical for medium and large-scale backups. For organizational purposes, it is more efficient to consolidate backups greater than 1.3 megabytes onto a different storage medium instead of "spanning" them across multiple floppy disks.

Reliability

Floppy disks are highly susceptible to corruption from a variety of sources: dust, humidity, magnetic fields, and physical damage. Due to the fragile nature of floppy media, we highly recommend that you only back up to floppy disko as a last resort. If you are stuck using floppy disks to backup your files, it is recommended that you make at least one duplicate, in case the original backup floppy should fail.

Performing backups

  1. Insert the floppy disk into the drive. Usually, this drive is designated by the letter "A".
  2. Copy files to the floppy disk in one of two ways:
    • Highlight the files with your mouse and drag them to the A: drive.
    • Right-click on the files and choose "Send to A: drive".
