Taking Steps for the Future
CDs can store approximately 700 megabytes of data. They are suitable for small, medium, or large scale backups. Should a backup require greater space than 700MB, it is possible to "span" them across multiple compact disks or use a DVD (if your burner supports writing them).
Reliability
CDs are suitable for long-term storage, provided they are cared for properly. They are susceptible to scratches and therefore should be handled carefully and stored in separate CD cases. Also, CDs should be kept out of direct sunlight as they can warp over time.
Performing backups
Campus Technology Services has included Nero Burning ROM software on all new faculty/staff PCs. Users can obtain a license for their personal computers via Nero's website.
Instructions for performing a simple backup using Nero can be found on this page.
