How do I setup my dial-up connection?

Refer to the documentation on configuring dial-up connections.  Select your operating system and follow the instructions.

When I dial, I get a message saying "Error 691". What does this mean?

Generally, this error means that you’ve been blocked from modem pool access due to numerous failed login attempts. This is an automatic security feature of the modem racks. Unblocking a user is a simple procedure; call TSC at x3456 and we will take the neccessary steps to remove the block from your username.

If the unblock procedure doesn’t work, and there are no reported problems with the modem pool, it is possible you’ve provided the wrong information in the username/password dialogue boxes. Be sure that you aren’t appending "oswego.edu" to the username, or supplying your full name instead of a username. Also, double-check that you’re entering the correct password.

When I dial, I get an error message saying, "The computer you dialed did not answer" or "port is already in use".

This problem might be caused by Rnaapp.exe, a part of Dial-Up Networking that loads itself into memory. If not properly unloaded, it will remain in memory and obstruct efforts to establish a modem connection.

To fix this:

  • Hit control-alt-delete once to bring up the Task List.
  • Look for 'RNAAPP'. If you find 'RNAAPP' listed, click once to select it, click 'END TASK', and reboot your computer.
  • Try to connect again.
