Overview of Services

Getting Connected

For more information about the following services visit http://www.oswego.edu/cts/services/getting_connected.html.

First things first - activate your SUNY Oswego email account!  This is needed to communicate with departments, students, and staff.  It is also needed to utilize many of the services that CTS provides, including email, wireless computing, our online learning management system, and more. Activation is available online at http://www.oswego.edu/admin

Reading your SUNY Oswego email - Once you have your account activated, you can read your SUNY Oswego email anytime, anywhere using our web-based mail reader called Communications Express available for use at http://www.oswego.edu/mail. If you would rather use an email client, there are a few different mail clients we recommend including Thunderbird and Outlook on the PC and Apple Mail on an Apple computer.

Internet Access - Get connected to the Internet through a variety of methods.  Connect directly to the campus network through the data port in your office.  Or, take your wireless equipped laptop to any of our wireless enabled spaces.  There are a multitude of wireless enabled spaces in many of the academic buildings and Penfield Library. Our wireless computing web site lists exact locations.  If you need to connect from home, access our dial-in modem pool.

While connecting to the Internet, please abide by our Computer and Network Acceptable Use Policy and practice good internet security.  Please make sure that your computer has the latest antivirus software installed and latest updates applied.  SUNY Oswego has a site license for the McAfee Antivirus software that is available for you to install on your office machines and home machines.

Phone calls - Work with your department to find out what options are available to you for calling plans and voice mail. If you need to make personal phone calls, you will need to set up a Personal Billing Number (PBN) through the Telecommunications office in Culkin Hall.  Applications and voice mail instructions are available from our web site.

Instructional Resources

For more information about the following resources visit http://www.oswego.edu/cts/services/instructional.

Teaching with Technology - Technology enhanced classrooms that include projection are available in almost every academic building to aid in the teaching and learning process. You may be assigned to teach in one of these Advanced Technology Classrooms (ATC).  If you need assistance using one of the ATCs, you may call x3534 to schedule an appointment with one of our technicians.  If you are not teaching in any of our ATCs, check with your department to see if a media cart is available.

In addition, there are a number of instructional computer labs available which include an instructor podium, projector, and computer stations.

Managing Your Classes - Some classes may be taught fully online through the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) or some may have a web-enhanced component to a normal face-to-face class.  The ANGEL learning management system is used for these courses.  Beginning in the Fall 2007 semester, all SUNY Oswego courses will be loaded into the ANGEL learning management system.  Training sessions for faculty on using ANGEL will be held throughout the fall semester.  Check out the ANGEL web site at http://www.oswego.edu/academics/angelfor more information and to register for a training session.

If you prefer to put some of your class materials on your personal web page or would just like to create your own personal web site, use our web editing software called OUEducate.  To get started and review our tutorial, visit http://www.oswego.edu/oueducate

For the administrative part of managing your classes, our student information system called "Banner" provides access to your class schedules and class listings.  The myoswego.oswego.edu website allows you to submit final student grades at the end of the semester.  We can also assist with class evaluations and electronic scoring of tests.

Research - Use Penfield Library's online catalog to search for books and periodicals that may assist you with your job, teaching and research. The Library also has a wealth of online databases available for searching.  Visit http://www.oswego.edu/library.

Posters and Scanners - Academic-related posters for presentations or conferences can be printed on our large format printer.  This service requires a fee to cover the costs of ink and paper.  Scanning of 35mm slides, 35mm negatives (color & black and white) and large format transparencies into digital images is also available.  The scanner is attached to a PC that includes digital correction software that can "clean-up" any media that may have scratches or dust on it.
