Taking Steps for the Future

Below is a "Technology Checklist" to help you prepare for your arrival to SUNY Oswego. All of these are things that you can do BEFORE you arrive on campus to make moving in a little less hectic.

  1. Activate your Laker NetID. This is the username and password that will allow you to access many of the services CTS provides including ResNet (residential network), wireless computing, online classes, the computer labs, and more.
  2.

  3. Install the latest operating system security updates for your computer before you arrive to campus. Microsoft Windows updates, Apple updates.
  4.

  5. Install Sophos, the university-provided anti-virus program available to all faculty, staff and students at no charge. Before installing Sophos, first uninstall any antivirus software you currently have. You can then download and install Sophos from our software downloads page.
  6.

  7. Access your Google email, calendar and documents by logging into LakerApps.  Remember that email is an official form of campus communication, so be sure to check your SUNY Oswego email regularly.
  8.

  9. Take care of business using the myOswego web site.  You can register for classes, pay your bill, check financial aid, and set up your emergency contact information.  Login using your Laker NetID and password.
  10.

  11. Familiarize yourself with the campus wireless system.  Check out or print the instructions for a one-time configuration of your device. You may also review our wireless map for many spaces where wireless computing is available. Apple users running the Lion or later operating system will need to make sure Java is installed to use the wireless network.  Apple did not include it in the Lion release.  You can download and install it from here.
  12.

  13. Become familiar with the general access computer labs available throughout the campus.
  14.

  15. Basic cable television service is included in your room rate. If you would like to learn more about upgrading to digital cable which includes premium channels, contact the Oswego Time Warner office at 315.343.1208.
  16.

  17. Educate yourself about digital copyright law, especially if you download apps, movies or music at home. You may be violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA).
