| Digital Phone Service Arriving to East End of Campus The construction of the new Science and Engineering complex affects one of the campuses major technology hubs. Instead of moving and replacing a substantial amount of underground phone lines, the campus will be switching to an all-digital telephone service called Voice over IP. This conversion has begun for the Campus Center. Departments there started receiving new digital handsets two weeks ago. Departments in Wilber, Park, and Lee will also be receiving new handsets in the coming weeks. The conversion for these four buildings needs to be completed by November 14th at which time underground analog lines will be cut in order for the construction to keep moving forward. The rest of the campus will be migrated to digital service at a later time. For more information related to the Voice over IP technology, please consult the CTS VoIP Upgrade page. |

| Lecture Capture Pilot Project A pilot project for capturing lectures of three SUNY Oswego courses began this semester. Class lectures for courses ECO101-800, NAS100-800, and GEO115-800 being taught respectively by professors John Kane, Kevin White and Dave Valentino are being digitally recorded and then uploaded to SUNY Oswego's iTunes U site. Lecture capture is a service that is catching on at many universities. There have been discussions about whether lecture capture has any benefits to the overall student performance in a class. There has also been worry that students will not attend class if lectures are available on-demand anytime, anywhere. "Lecture Capture Benefits Noted," an article from the Columbia University Center for New Media Teaching and Learning, points to studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Leeds University and our own SUNY Fredonia to help answer the question of if there is any benefit to lecture capture. In summary, all three studies indicated an improvement in student test scores. What happens with lecture capture at SUNY Oswego after the pilot project is yet to be determined. An analysis will be completed at the end of the semester to help the campus decide how to proceed with lecture capture service. |
