Featured Article: Wireless Computing Upgrade Completed
CTS completed the wireless upgrade scheduled for December 29th.
At this time, the VPN client has been decommissioned and will no longer function on the campus wireless network. Instead, the new system requires a one-time configuration necessary to set-up your device for secure access and then will simply ask for your Laker NetID whenever you are in a SUNY Oswego wireless-enabled space. Before connecting to the new system, please review and/or print the instructions for your particular device. These instructions and frequently asked questions about the new system can be found at the CTS wireless website at www.oswego.edu/cts/wireless.
The new wireless system works with Mac OS 10.4 and above, Windows XP SP 3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and iPhone/iPod Touch firmware version 2.x and 3.x. It is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the above-mentioned operating systems. Currently, there is a problem using the new system with iPhone/iPod Touch devices running at firmware version 3.x. We are actively working on getting this fixed and will post an announcement at a later time when it has been resolved.
If you require assistance with the one-time configuration, please make sure to review the instructions for your device at the CTS wireless website mentioned above. If you still encounter problems you may call the Technology Support Center (TSC) at (315) 312.3456. Please check the TSC web page for hours of operation.

Wireless Computing Available in Hart Hall Residence Hall Rooms
From the time they return to campus, Hart Hall students will be able to use the SUNY Oswego wireless network from their residence hall rooms. Students may choose whether they would like to connect to the network through this wireless connection or they may also continue to use the wired connection. Both will require the use of the Cisco NAC agent to properly ensure the network is free of viruses and other malware.
Approximately 70 SUNY Oswego wireless access points were installed in Hart Hall to support this initiative. Johnson and Riggs Halls are in line to be the next residence halls equipped with wireless depending on the success of Hart.

Campus Email Upgrade
CTS and the Campus Technology Advisory Board (CTAB) have been investigating alternative email solutions for all faculty, staff, and students. Currently, the campus is using Communications Express from Sun Microsystems as the campus web-based email system. Given some hardware malfunctions supporting this product over the past year along with the lack of certain software features, CTS decided to investigate other options.
Last fall, CTS started looking at products that would allow the campus to have unified email and calendar functionality along with mobile devices. The products have been narrowed down to two, Google Apps and Microsoft Live@EDU. In addition to email and calendar features, both products also offer file storage and file sharing capabilities. CTS and CTAB members are evaluating the products and will record their testing feedback and final recommendation to a survey. A decision on which product to choose should be made by February.
Both products are offered to college campuses at no charge and are available “in the cloud.” That is, they are both hosted at the vendor’s data center(s). |

Windows 7 and Snow Leopard Compatibility
Although not officially supported on campus yet, the Windows 7 and Macintosh Snow Leopard operating systems are now supported on ResNet and the SUNY Oswego wireless network. Previously, Cisco did not offer a compatible NAC agent required to use on ResNet nor a compatible VPN client required for the wireless network. We are happy to announce that both are now available.
A new version of McAfee for Windows 7 is also available for download from the Technology Support Center’s Software Downloads page.
CTS continues to test additional software for compatibility with both operating systems.

Laker NetID
You may have started seeing or hearing the term “Laker NetID” in association with CTS services. This term is used to help differentiate between your login username/password and new SUNY Oswego faculty/staff email addresses. Any service that requires a login username/password is now referred to as your “Laker NetID.” If you belong to a department that has any web pages or online services that refer to using SUNY Oswego login credentials, please update them to reference the new “Laker NetID” name. |
