Free Screencasting Software

In an effort to provide faculty, staff and students with information on free screencasting software that faculty and students can use as an alternative to what we have in the Multimedia Room in 210 Penfield, we present the following:

From TechSmith, the makers of Camtasia Studio, Jing offers a free, lightweight alternative. You can instantly create screenshots and brief tutorials with this wonderful software.

Check out their website to learn more and to download the software. Rules have been added to our domain that will allow you to install this software without admin rights.

This browser-based software application (requires no download or install) enables you to make simple screencasts. You have the option to save them to disk or to publish online.

A pro version allows you to edit recordings and many other features. Take a look at their website to learn more.

YouTube Recorder

If all you want to do is use a webcam and make a quick and dirty video to submit to your YoutTube channel, look no further. YouTube has it's own webcam interface that you can record with.

Something of a recent development - online video editing! That's right, no software to install, setup a free account (limit of 15 minutes of video export/month and a watermark) and get started. Lots of great features and the ability to publish to many platforms (Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube) make this a fun and flexible application to work with.

If you have any questions about these apps feel free to email our multimedia support team at
