Setting up Outlook 2007 with LakerApps Gmail

These instructions were adapted from Google's documentation written for Outlook 2007. If you are running a different version of Outlook, please consult the list of setup directions provided by Google. The server addresses needed for configuration are listed in step 8 of the instructions below.

To set up your Outlook 2007 client to work with LakerApps Gmail:

  1. Enable IMAP in Gmail first. Be sure to click the Save Changes button before continuing.

  2. Open Outlook.
  3. Go to the Tools menu and choose Account Settings.
  4. Click the E-mail tab and click New...

  5. Select Microsoft Exchange, POP, IMAP or HTTP and click Next.

  6. Enter your display name, full SUNY Oswego email address and Laker NetID password.
  7. Select the 'Manually configure server settings or additional server types' checkbox and click Next.

  8. Select Internet E-mail. Click Next.

  9. User Information settings:
    • Your Name = your full name (e.g., John Doe)
    • Email Address = your full SUNY Oswego email address (e.g., john.doe@oswego.edu)
  10. Server Information settings:
    • Account Type = IMAP
    • Incoming mail server = imap.gmail.com
    • Outgoing mail server = smtp.gmail.com
  11. Login Information settings:
    • User Name = your full SUNY Oswego email address (e.g., john.doe@oswego.edu)
    • Password = your Laker NetID password

  12. Click More Settings, then the Outgoing Server tab. Under this tab:
    • Make sure that 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' is selected.
    • The radio button 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server' should be selected.

  13. Click the Advanced tab. Under this tab:
    • Incoming server = 993, using SSL encryption.
    • Outgoing server = 587, using TLS encryption.

  14. Click OK and/or Finish/Close to any remaining open windows.
Check Google's recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.
