Recommended settings for reducing PC energy consumption

Select your operating system from the list below:

Windows 2000

  1. Click Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Display.
  2. Click the Screen Saver tab.
  3. Click the Power button.
  4. Under Power Schemes, select Home/Office Desk.
  5. Set Turn off monitor: to After 10 mins.
  6. Set Turn off hard disks: to After 1 hour.
  7. Click OK.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start --> Control Panel.
  2. If you are using Classic View,clickPower Options. If you are using Category View, click Performance and Maintenance --> Power Options.
  3. Under Power Schemes, select Home/Office Desk.
  4. Set Turn off monitor: to After 10 mins.
  5. Set Turn off hard disks: to After 1 hour.
  6. Click OK.

Mac OS X

  1. Click Apple Menu --> System Preferences --> Energy Saver.
  2. Click the Sleep tab.
  3. Drag the indicator for Put the computer to sleep whenever it's inactiveforto 1 hr.
  4. Drag the indicator for Put the display to sleep whenever it's inactiveforto 10 min.
  5. Check the box labeled Put hard disks to sleep when possible.
  6. Close the preference pane.
