The Counseling and Psychological Services Department offers degree programs
in three areas— Mental Health Counseling, Counseling Services, and School
Psychology.
The Mental Health Counseling program is a 48 hour program
designed to prepare human service providers to deal with problems and general
concerns of human service agency clients and employees. An option within the
program permits students to meet the educational requirements for credentialing
in alcoholism and and substance abuse counseling. Student who complete
additional fieldwork and pass the State examination become eligible for
Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) status.
The Counseling Services program offers 3 possible options
for completing a degree within the program.
- Master of Science degree in Counseling Services
- Master of Science degree in Counseling Services and a Certificate of
Advanced Study
- Certificate of Advanced Study in Counseling Services
Upon completion of either of the MS degree options or, where appropriate, the
CAS option, the student becomes eligible for provisional certification as a
School Counselor in New York State. Permanent certification may be awarded by
the New York State Education Department upon successful completion of an MS
degree in Counseling Services, 60 graduate credit hours, and 2 years of
successful experience.
The School Psychology program also offers 3 possible
options for completing a degree within the program.
- Master of Science degree in School Psychology
- Master of Science degree in School Psychology and a Certificate of Advanced
Study
- Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology
Upon completion of either of the MS degree options or, where appropriate, the
CAS option, the student becomes eligible for provisional certification as a
School Psychologist in New York State. Permanent certification may be awarded
by the New York State Education Department upon successful completion of 2
years of successful experience.
The Graduate Certificate Program in Play Therapy allows
students to obtain a comprehensive authentic learning experience in play
therapy. Students who complete the certificate program qualify for
training to become Certified Play Therapists through the National Institute for
Relationship Enhancement and earn the necessary educational credits toward
certification as a Certified Play Therapist, and/or a Child Psychotherapist
through the Association for Play Therapy and Play Therapy International
respectively. The certificate program welcomes current students and
practitioners in the fields of psychology, education, counseling, and human
development. Participants must have an earned Bachelor’s degree. This is not a
