Are You Ready For Blackboard Learn?

Fall classes will be starting in a couple of weeks and with it the complete transition from ANGEL to Blackboard Learn.

As a reminder, the last day ANGEL access will be available is Monday, August 31, 2015.  After that, any attempts to access it will be redirected to Blackboard Learn.

If you need assistance preparing to use Blackboard Learn with your classes, you should register for one of our workshops or use the online documentation from our Blackboard Learn website at www.oswego.edu/bb.  There are a number of workshops being offered this month and span the following topics.

  • Introduction to Bb Learn and Content Creation:  learn how to create a course syllabus, various types of information/files, links to content and internet-based resources. Registration required.
  • Bb Learn Communications and Interaction Tools: learn how to use announcements, course messages, email, discussions, notifications, and other communication tools.  Registration required.
  • Bb Learn Assessment Tool: learn how to create a tests (quizzes), surveys, and test pools.  Registration required.
  • Bb Learn Grade Center: learn how to set up the grade center to easily manage student grades. Registration required.
  • Bb Learn Office Hours: Drop by and visit one of our instructional designers/technologists who will work individually with you to prepare your course(s) for the Fall 2015 semester.  Registration is NOT required.

First Set of Classes Now Teaching with Blackboard Learn

In the fall, we announced the planning surrounding the campus migration from the ANGEL learning management system to Blackboard Learn. The campus will be completely migrated to Blackboard Learn by the Fall 2015 semester.

The first cohort of faculty participating in the migration are now teaching with Blackboard Learn this spring semester. There are approximately 50 faculty teaching 130 courses with 3400 students in a mixture of fully online, hybrid and face-to-face offerings.

While there are a few configurations that are still being worked on, we are happy to say that the semester is off to a good start. There have been no major issues that would force us to revert back to ANGEL.

In the next few weeks, we will be seeking participants for the second cohort of faculty teaching summer classes. Please look for an announcement regarding that in the future.

Initial Configuration
The migration team spent the fall semester configuring the Blackboard Learn environment working on the integration to automatically pull in courses and registration data, single sign-on authentication using your Laker NetID, the look and feel of the system and the configuration of plugins such as Panopto for class capture, Ensemble for video storage, i-clicker for student response, Pearson and McGraw Hill publisher content access, lynda.com for online tutorials, and ARES for access the library e-reserves system.

Faculty and Student Preparation
To prepare the first cohort for the migration, faculty participated in a full-day training taught by Open SUNY to learn about the differences between ANGEL and Blackboard Learn. Their courses were migrated to Blackboard and additional training sessions were offered to assist faculty in preparing their content and further understanding the features available in Blackboard Learn. An additional nine sessions were offered during the CELT-sponsored Winter BreakOut. Students were also offered some online training materials and an online orientation to help them understand using Blackboard Learn.

Migration Schedule
The rest of the migration schedule is as follows:

  • Spring 2015 semester:  First cohort of faculty and students will use Blackboard Learn. Refinements to the Blackboard Learn environment will be made based on feedback.
  • Summer 2015: Second cohort of faculty and students will use Blackboard Learn. Refinements to the Blackboard Learn environment will be made based on feedback.
  • Fall 2015: Migration completed. All courses will be available to teach in Learn. ANGEL will be decommissioned.

The Blackboard migration team includes Extended Learning, CTS, Penfield Library, CELT and OpenSUNY.

TIP Grant Awards

The 2013-14 Technology Initiative Project (TIP) awards were ratified at the Friday, December 6 Campus Technology Advisory Board meeting. A total of $65,000 was available to be awarded and the selection committee received ten (10) requests totaling $155,000.

TIP grants are an annual funding provided by the Campus to fund academic initiatives that relate to instruction, student usage, improving student usage, and/or improving student learning through the use of technology. Priority is given to new and innovative or trial initiatives, which can possibly later expand on campus, although equipment replacement and expansion of existing equipment requests will also be considered.

Projects that were funded this year include:

  • School of Communication, Media and the Arts, School of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Penfield Library (Kelly Roe, Tom Ingram, Jacob Dodd, Mark Springston and Emily Thompson) – In the first ever joint request from all four primary academic schools and the library, a campus-wide Lynda.com subscription will be purchased for all faculty, staff and students of the University for the next 18 months. With LyndaCampus, students, faculty and staff have full access to thousands of videos and tutorial files anywhere, anytime, both on their computer and via their mobile device. Lynda.com’s vast online library has thousands of video-based courses taught by industry professionals ranging from Business skills and Adobe products to Developer languages and tools, 3D animation, TIP Grants Recommendationsoffice productivity software and more. The videos are broken down into short segments for easy navigation and allows the user to log in and out as necessary without losing any data. Faculty who have piloted Lynda.com say it is a great way to assist in “Flipping the classroom”. It is suggested faculty may assign tutorials from LyndaCampus for a project or course work. In completion of the course, the student will be issued a certificate as proof of completion.
  • Art & Graphic Design (Cara Thompson & Rebecca Mushtare)– this request was made to assist Graphic design keep pace in the design field and the technology within it. Department faculty are actively learning new mobile technologies (web, apps, eBooks) and integrating these new literacies into all graphic design courses. This grant provides a class set of iPad minis which allows students in the program to master the new techniques. Additionally, professional quality photography add-ons will enable the students to use iPads to take photos, record audio and video and write code, greatly increasing the types of projects students can work on. There are 240 graduate and undergraduate majors in the program and approximately 350 students take graphic design classes per semester.
  • Psychology (Matt Dykas & Chrsitina Leclerc)- Psychology requested money to begin developing a state-of-the-art research laboratory for Psychology majors. Psychology estimates 600 students will be impacted by the funding over the course of their career. In particular a Noldus Observational XT data collection system, which will allow students to record and measure discrete human behaviors as they occur in real time.
  • Health, Promotion and Wellness (Sandy Bargaineer, Amy Bidwell, Minjung Seo, Mary pagan,
    Elizabeth Benevento and Diane Oldenberg) – Fitbit © technology will be purchased to motivate,
    monitor and measure health behaviors in a variety of HFW courses that touch over 800 students annually. Additionally PC equipment will be provided to assist in data analysis.

lynda.com E-learning Software Now Available

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we introduce LyndaCampus to the SUNY Oswego community. The Lynda.com learning library is now available for faculty, staff, students and administration to use. With LyndaCampus, you have full access to thousands of videos and tutorial files anywhere, anytime 24/7, on a computer or via mobile device/tablets.

Access to Lynda.com was provided by a Technology Initiative Project (TIP) grant supported by the School of Communication, Media and the Arts, School of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Penfield Library (Kelly Roe, Tom Ingram, Jacob Dodd, Mark Springston and Emily Thompson). It is the first ever joint request from all four primary academic schools and the library.

lynda’s vast online library has thousands of video-based courses taught by industry professionals ranging from business skills and Adobe products to developer languages and tools, 3D animation, office productivity software and more.

Please note that lynda.com replaces the previously contracted SKillport e-learning software. Skillport will be decommissioned on January 21st. Please plan accordingly.

Some members on campus have already been using lynda.com during a pilot project conducted on campus this past spring. On Tuesday, January 21, from 3-3:50 pm, a panel of faculty, staff and students will be discussing how they have been using lynda for their professional development, flipping the classroom and support of student projects.  For more information and registration, please see the CELT Winter BreakOut schedule.

Get Started with Lecture Capture at SUNY Oswego

Over the past 3 semesters, CTS has supported a software application across campus called Panopto. With Panopto, not only can you create recordings in the classroom, but you can also do it from home, your office, or even the airport with the mobile application (currently Apple iOS only).

Not only does Panopto make it easy to create recordings, it also makes it incredibly easy to share them on blogs, through email, websites, and in ANGEL. Even on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media site of your choice.
