Women's Tennis Wraps Up Fall Season With 6-3 Loss To Roberts Wesleyan

Doubles Player At NreThe Oswego State women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season with a 6-3 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday at the Romney Tennis Courts in Oswego. The Lakers finished doubles play ahead 2-1, but were unable to gain any ground in singles competition as they fell to 2-8 overall.

Women's Tennis Player Tiarra Garrow Named 2009 Cahill Award Winner

Tiarra GarrowOswego State senior Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville/National Sports Academy) has been selected as the winner of the third annual Peter J. Cahill Award. The award, which is awarded annually to the SUNYAC’s Most Valuable Player in women’s tennis, was named to honor the commitment and success of Cahill, a former Cortland tennis coach who passed away in 2006.

Garrow took second place in the #1 singles flight at the recent SUNYAC Women’s Tennis Championships.  She won a grueling first round three-set match that lasted over three hours.  She then won her second round match against an opponent that had previously beaten her during the regular season, before falling to the eventual SUNYAC champion in the final round.

Tiarra Garrow Falls In SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship Match

Tiarra GarrowOswego State senior Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville, N.Y.) lost to top-seeded Monica Vieth of Geneseo 6-2. 6-3 in the #1 singles flight at the SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday morning in Syracuse. Garrow was the #2 seed in the top singles flight. The Lakers earned eight points to finish in fifth place to improve on last year's sixth place finish.

Garrow battled back from a one set deficit to defeat Loraine Jelinek of Cortland 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the first round before going on to defeat Stephanie Schara of New Paltz 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the semifinals.

Tiarra Garrow Advances To SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championship Match

Tiarra GarrowSenior Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville, N.Y.) advanced to the SUNY Athletic Conference women's tennis championship match in #1 singles after winning two matches at the Eastside Racquet Club in Syracuse on Saturday. Garrow, the #2 seed in the bracket, defeated Loraine Jelinek of Cortland in the first round, and will face top-seed Monica Vieth of Geneseo at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Other first round matches included Jenna Wehn (Sr., Gloversville, N.Y.) versus Mallory Long of Fredonia at #2 singles, Christine Burkhart (Sr., Canandaigua, N.Y.) versus Emily Shannon of Oneonta at #3 singles, Vicky Kulczak (Jr., Port Jervis, N.Y.) versus Kristen Caase, Plattsburgh at #4 singles, Michele Hierholzer (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) versus Katie Gayvert, Geneseo at #5 singles, and Aislinn Leary (So., Johnstown, N.Y.) versus Chelsea Mang, Fredonia at #6 singles.

Women's Tennis Prepares To Play At SUNYAC Championships
The Oswego State women's tennis team will spend the next two days preparing to compete at the 26th annual State University of New York Athletic Conference Tennis Championships, which takes place Oct. 9-11, 2009, at the Eastside Racquet Club in Syracuse. The tournament begins at 4 p.m. on Friday. Competition on Saturday and Sunday will start at 9 a.m.

The Lakers, who are 2-7 overall and 1-6 in league competition, look to improve on their sixth place finish at last year’s conference tournament.  Geneseo enters the championships as the defending SUNYAC Champion.
