MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Oswego State)

Championship game: #8 The College at Brockport 64, #5 SUNY Fredonia 59

Senior guard Mychal Wilkes (Newark/Newark) scored a game-high 27 points, and went perfect from the free-throw line for the second straight game as the College at Brockport fought a last minute rally by Fredonia State to come away with a 64-59 triumph in the championship game of the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium on the campus of SUNY Oswego.

The Golden Eagles (14-14), the tournament's eighth seed, captured their sixth straight SUNYAC tournament title and first since the 2001-02 season, knocking off top seeded Geneseo in the quarterfinals and host and third-seeded Oswego State in the semifinals. Brockport also earned the automatic berth into next week's NCAA Division III Championship.

Wilkes, the tournament's most valuable player, was the team's lone player in double digits, shooting 9-for-14 from the floor, 3-for-7 from three-point range, and 6-for-6 from the foul line. He also registered three assists and three steals. He tied the tournament record with 12 steals in three games.  Senior guard Joe Clarke (Liverpool/Liverpool), who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with nine points, going 2-for-4 from the field, all from three-point range, making three of six free throws, and contributing five rebounds and two steals.

Junior guard Brad Cooper (Monticello/Monticello) and sophomore guard Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) scored 17 and 10 points respectively to lead the Blue Devils (18-9). Both were also named to the all-tournament team, along with Oswego State's Chad Burridge (Hannibal/Hannibal), and Carson Niehoff (West Islip) of Cortland. Cooper scored seven of Fredonia's final nine points in the final minute of play, including a layup off of his steal with 40 seconds remaining to pull the Blue Devils to within four points (59-55).  Freshman Leonard Smith also scored in double figures for Fredonia, contributing 11 points off the bench.
