2009 STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP (at Oswego State)

Semifinal #2: No. 8 The College at Brockport 84, No. 3 Oswego State 70

Senior guard Mychal Wilkes (Newark/Newark) scored a game-high 21 points, going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, and tallied eight rebounds and five steals as eighth-seeded College at Brockport registered its second upset win in the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Championships, defeating third seed and host Oswego State, 84-70, in the second semifinal of the evening at Max Ziel Gymnasium,

The Golden Eagles (13-14), who knocked off top-seeded SUNY Geneseo three days earlier in the quarterfinals, will make their second trip to the championship game in three years, facing fifth-seeded Fredonia State at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The Lakers, runners-up in last year's SUNYAC championship game, finishes its tournament run with a 19-7 record.

It's the first time in eight years that the eighth seed has reached the SUNYAC championship final game. SUNY New Paltz was the last team to accomplish the feat in 2003, knocking off top seed Potsdam and fifth seed Brockport in reaching the final, where the Hawks lost to third seed Buffalo State in the championship.

Wilkes was one of three starters, and four players overall to score in double figures for Brockport, who shot 41.2 percent from the floor (28-68) and 85.2 percent (23 of 27) from the free-throw line. Senior guard Shawn Harris (Rochester/Gates-Chili) contributed 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals, while senior Joe Clarke (Liverpool) added 10 points and Eamon Kays (Mexico/Mexico) tallied 11 points in 19 minutes off of the bench.

The Lakers had four of five starters scoring in double digits, led by senior guard Kyle Reuter with 18 points on 7-for-11 field goal shooting in 38 minutes of action before fouling out of the game in the final minute of the game.  Freshman Chad Burridge (Hannibal/Hannibal) recorded a "double-double" with 13 points and 15 rebounds, as did junior Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/SUNY Cobleskill) with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) finished with 11 points and a game-high tying five assists.

There were five ties and three lead changes in the first 7:12 of the first half. The final tie of the half, and eventually the game, came at 14-14 with 12:48 to play before Oswego used a 6-2 mini run to take a 20-16 lead. Brockport responded with a jumper by Clarke and a three-pointer from Wilkes to spark a 12-2 run to take a 28-22 lead with 6:28 remaining in the half, a lead that they would never relinquish for the rest of the game.

The Lakers would pull to within a basket (50-48) on a three-pointer from sophomore Jose Uribe (Far Rockaway/Newtown) 7:02 into the second half, but the Golden Eagles would keep Oswego at bay for most of the half, maintaining a 7-8 point advantage that built up to 12 points (66-54) with 4:04 to play. Brockport went 12-for-12 from the line for the final 1:42 of the contest, with Wilkes hitting all eight of his free throws in the stretch.
