Luke Moodie Honored As SUNYAC Men's Hockey Rookie of the Week

Luke MoodieOswego State men's hockey player Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) has been named the SUNY Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Rookie of the Week for the week ending February 7, 2010. The Lakers improved to 21-1-0 overall and 13-0-0 in the conference with a 5-2 win over Cortland.

Moodie registered two goals and an assist in the Lakers’ 5-2 win over Cortland on Friday. Moodie assisted the game’s first goal on a power play before scoring a power play goal of his own in the second period. His second goal of the contest came 1:33 after Cortland made the score 4-1.

Men's Hockey Sends Seniors Out In Style With 5-2 Win Over Cortland

Luke MoodieThe Oswego State men’s ice hockey team celebrated Senior Night with a 5-2 victory over Cortland at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Friday. Freshman Luke Moodie (Burlington, Ont.) tallied two goals and an assist to lead the top-ranked Division III team. The Lakers, who moved to 21-1-0 overall and 13-0-0 in the SUNYAC, went 3-for-4 on the power play in the first two periods for a 4-0 lead after the second period. The Red Dragons fell to 7-15-0 on the season and 4-9-0 in the league standings.

Following after a face-off in the Cortland zone after a Red Dragon holding penalty, Laker captain Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) wound up for a slap shot that was deflected by Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.).  The deflection went through Brittan Kuhlman’s (Elkhorn, Neb.) five-hole for Rodrigues’ fifth goal of the season.  Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) was also credited with an assist.

Men's Ice Hockey Players Honored As SUNYAC Players of the Week

Jon WhitelawOswego State men's hockey players Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.) and Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) have been named the SUNY Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player and Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 31, 2010. The top-ranked Lakers reached the 20-win plateau at 20-1-0 overall and pushed their conference record to 12-0-0 after defeating Potsdam and Plattsburgh last weekend.

Whitelaw recorded three points (two goals, one assist) to help the Lakers stay undefeated in conference play with a 5-1 win over Potsdam and a 3-2 win over fourth-ranked Plattsburgh. Whitelaw’s goal early in the second period broke a scoreless tie against the Bears. He later assisted Oswego State’s third goal, which gave the Lakers a two-score lead. Against Plattsburgh, Whitelaw recorded the game-winning goal in the second period as Oswego State posted its first win over the Cardinals in the Campus Center Arena. He ranks third among Division III rookies averaging 1.50 points per game with 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists).

Musselwhite Chosen As Finalist For NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, Show Support By Voting

Skills ChallengeOswego State senior men’s ice hockey player Neil Musselwhite (Burlington, Ont.) has been selected as one of 78 finalists to compete in the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge at Ford Field in Detroit. To help determine the final 32 student-athletes who will participate in the skills challenge, the NCAA has incorporated a fan-voting element. Fan voting begins Monday, Feb. 1, on www.ncaa.com/frozenfourskillschallenge and will conclude at Noon Eastern time, Monday, Feb. 15. Fans may vote once day at this site by clicking on the “Men’s East” team.

Neil MusselwhiteMusselwhite is one of only three Division III men’s hockey players to be named among the finalists, and is the only Division III men’s hockey player from the East.  He ranks second on the squad with 16 goals and leads all NCAA Divisions with five short-handed goals this season. Men's Hockey Sweeps Season Series With Plattsburgh After 3-2 Win

CelebrationThe No. 1-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team defeated fourth-ranked Plattsburgh 3-2 on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd for the program’s first victory over the Cardinals at the Campus Center Arena. Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.) tallied the eventual game-winning goal at 5:53 in the second period. The Lakers took a five-point lead over Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC standings with a 12-0-0 record and moved to 20-1-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 13-3-4 overall and 9-2-1.

Oswego State raced out of the gates early as Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) gave the Lakers an early 1-0 lead 34 seconds into the contest.  Tyler Leimbrock (Fr., Bolton, Ont.) carried the puck up the right side before putting a wrist shot on net.  Plattsburgh goaltender Josh Leis (Fr., Kitchener, Ont.) gave up the rebound, as Musselwhite took advantage putting the puck in the top-left corner.  Leimbrock and Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ont.) were credited with assists on the play.
