The Oswego State men's and women's cross country teams welcome an elite field of 13 teams for an early-season invitational this weekend on the Oswego State campus. The competition schedule begins with the Pat Peterson Women's 5K race, followed by the Don Masterson Men's 8K race. Both events will start and finish in front of Culkin Hall on the Oswego State campus and the race course will lead competitors on a scenic route through campus around the Glimmerglass Lagoon and along the shoreline of Lake Ontario.
Competing teams joining the host Lakers include SUNYAC member institutions Cortland, Buffalo State, and Geneseo. Rounding out the field will be Keuka, Le Moyne, Daemen, Ithaca, Utica, Alfred, Houghton, St. Lawrence, and the Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Several of those teams are nationally and regionally ranked. In the men's race, Geneseo is ranked 21st and Cortland is 33rd according to the preseason NCAA rankings. In the Atlantic Region Geneseo is third, Cortland is fourth, and St. Lawrence is eighth. Four women's teams appear in both rankings. The Geneseo Knights, the defending NCAA Division III Champions, are ranked first in the NCAA and first in the Atlantic Region. Ithaca is third nationally, St. Lawrence is 26th nationally, and Cortland is 32nd. In the Atlantic Region Ithaca is third and St. Lawrence and Cortland are tied for fourth.
Both second-place finishers in last year's event return to compete this year. Erik Donohoe of St. Lawrence will look to improve one spot in the finishing order after crossing the line behind 2005 champion Julius Rono of Roberts Wesleyan. Rono set the course record with a time of 24:59 last year. It was a similar story in the women's race last year. The race winner, Jodie Schoppmann of Potsdam, set the course record at 17:26. The second-place finisher, Liz Montgomery of Geneseo, will be back to compete this year.
The top Laker runners from the Buffalo State Invitational last weekend were Caitlin Wlodarski, a sophomore from Cicero-North Syracuse High School, and Tony Battista, a senior from Watertown.
Check back here for results immediately following competition on Sept. 9.
