Women's Hockey Opens Conference Play With 2-1 Win At Potsdam

Emily GrippinTwo first period goals helped the Oswego State women's hockey team open ECAC West play with a 2-1 win at Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. Emily Grippin and Jenna Kirkwood scored the Laker goals as Oswego State improved to 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference. The Bears fell to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league.

Emily Grippin (Jr., Ithaca, N.Y.) put the Lakers on the board at the 8:09 mark in the first period with an unassisted shorthanded goal.  Oswego State added another goal minutes later when Jenna Kirkwood (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) scored her third goal of the season with assists awarded to Grippin and Sarah Hannon (Jr., Lackawanna, N.Y.) as the Lakers went into the first period intermission with the 2-0 lead.

Potsdam cut into the lead early in the second period when Courtney Laughlin scored a power play goal, but that would be the final goal of the game for either team.  The Bears pulled their goaltender with 38 seconds remaining in the game, but could not even the score to send the game into overtime.

Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) had a solid game in the net for Oswego State as she made 23 saves on 24 shots.  Potsdam goaltender Hilary Hitchman stopped 21 of the 23 shots she faced in the losing effort. 

Both squads will square off again on Sunday at 3 p.m.
