Men's Diver and Women's Cross Country Runner Honored as Oswego State Student-Athletes of the Week
Oswego State has named men’s diver Shawn Merlin and women’s cross country athlete Rachel Sanborn as the college’s Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 1.
Junior diver Shawn Merlin (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events in dual meets against RIT and Oneonta this past week. Merlin qualified for the 2010 NCAA Diving Championships on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 279.60 against RIT. He is undefeated in each of the six diving events he has competed in this season.
Freshman cross country athlete Rachel Sanborn (Liberty, N.Y./Tri-Valley Central) posted a 21st-place finish at the 2009 SUNYAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday. She crossed the finish line in 24:49 for the highest Laker women’s finish since 2004 when Leann Donnelly took fifth place with a time of 23:39.
Sanborn, a global and international studies major, is the daughter of Vincent Sanborn of Grahamsville, N.Y. and Marianna Sanborn of Liberty, N.Y.
