Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaking Overtime Loss Versus Fredonia

Liz MillerThe Oswego State women's soccer team's playoff hopes suffered a setback with a 1-0 overtime loss to Fredonia on Saturday afternoon in Oswego. The loss moves the Lakers into seventh place in the conference standings at 2-3-0 and 6-7-0 overall, while the Blue Devils moved to third at 4-1-0 and 9-4-1 overall.

Oswego State will travel to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles on Friday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.  Fredonia will host Potsdam Oct. 16 at 4 p.m.

In a contest that had heavy playoff implications, both squads went up and down the field as neither team was able to break through for a goal in the first 90 minutes of play.  The squads appeared to be headed to a second overtime period before Lauren Heilweil (Sr., Binghamton, N.Y.) dribbled the ball the entire length of the field to tally the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils at the 98:58 mark.

Fredonia owned a slim 13-11 edge in shot attempts, but the Lakers’ Holly Lyndaker (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) and the Blue Devils’ Meaghan Meszaros (Fr., Selden, N.Y.) each recorded six saves.

SeniorsSaturday’s game was the last home contest of the regular season for Oswego State as it honored five seniors, Leah Paige (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Julie McCloskey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Brooke Sherman (Oswego, N.Y.), Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen, N.Y.), and Lyndaker.
