Ventresca provides record-setting performance in 22-3 Laker win over Keuka
Senior attack Rachel Ventresca (Syracuse/Henninger) set two single game school records with a career-high nine goals and five assists as Oswego State (9-6) assured themselves of a winning season for the first time in three years with a 22-5 non-conference triumph over Keuka College on Friday, April 24 on Laker Field.
Ventresca’s nine goals broke the previous single-game mark of eight, shared by four players, including herself in the season-opening win versus Salve Regional, while her 14 points surpassed the previous record of 12, set by all-time leading scorer Kat Stead (eight goals, four assists) exactly a year to the day in 2001 against Oneonta.
With two games remaining in the regular-season schedule, Ventresca ranks fourth on the Lakers’ all-time scoring list with 177 points, tallying 123 goals and 54 assists, both ranking fifth all-time in their respective categories.
She leads the team this season in goals (51), assists (32), and points (83), and is within reach of the single-game record for each (66 goals, 32 assists, 90 points), all held by Kat Stead over a four-year period (2000-03). Ventresca will complete her degree this spring after only three years.
Eight players recorded goals and registered assists for the Lakers, who scored seven times in the opening 6:50 of the game. Freshman Rachael Raffa (Kings Park) scored four goals and dished out five assists, while junior Jessica Zenzel (Johnson City), sophomores Bri Borrow (Oswego) and Kelly Schroeder (Warwick/Warwick Valley), and freshman Kristen Darcy (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) each scored two goals.
Senior Shannon O’Brien (Syracuse/West Genesee) played the entire 60 minutes and made 13 saves while giving up a season-low five goals.
Junior Jenn York (Rochester/Monroe CC) led the Storm (3-6) with three goals.
Oswego closes out its regular-season home schedule with a noon SUNYAC contest with Oneonta State. The game is part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader with the Red Dragons, with the men following at approximately 2:30 p.m.
