Derrick Smith seeded eighth at 141 pounds for this weekend's NCAA Division III Championships

Oswego State senior Derrick Smith (Mexico) garnered the eighth seed in the 141-pound weight class for the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, set for Friday and Saturday, March 6-7 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Smith (30-7) is making his third straight trip to the nationals after finishing second at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Championships hosted by the Lakers on Feb. 21. His run towards a national title begins in the opening round on Friday at 11:00 a.m. (central time), facing Gregg Martino of New York University. A win will move him into the quarterfinals later in the day, facing either John Paxos of Ithaca College or top seed Austin Bautista of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Competition continues the following day at 10:30 a.m. with the Championship semifinals and consolation quarterfinals, and will continue throughout leading to the consolation placement matches and the championship finals later in the evening.\
