Three Lakers named to All-SUNYAC team, Chad Burridge earns conference Rookie of the Year accolades
The Oswego State men’s basketball team placed three players on the 2008-09 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All-Conference Team announced by the league office on Monday, March 2. The senior backcourt duo of Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) and Kyle Reuter (Mexico) were selected to the first team, while junior forward Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/Suffern) garnered honorable mention accolades. Additionally, freshman forward Chad Burridge (Hannibal) was honored as the 2008-09 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.
All four were instrumental in leading the Lakers to a 16-10 overall record and a 15-9 mark in conference play, earning a share of the SUNYAC regular-season championship and the third-seed in the conference championship tournament, dropping an 84-70 decision to eventual champion College at Brockport in the semifinals.
It is the second consecutive All-SUNYAC honor for Downing, who was named to the second team last season, while Reuter earns All-Conference accolades for the first time. Both players finished third and fourth in scoring, respectively, in the final conference standings. Downing averaged 17.6 points per game in 16 contests, shooting 38.9 percent (89-for-229) from the floor, 38.5 percent (42 of 109) from three-point range, and 78.5 percent (62-for-79) from the free-throw line. He finished as the conference leader in steals with 40 (2.5 pg), ranked second in assists (96, 6.0 pg) and made 3-pointers, and 11th in three-point shooting percentage.
Reuter averaged 17.1 points per game during regular-season conference play, shooting 39 percent (83-for-213) from the field, 36.9 percent (38-for-103) from beyond the arc, and a conference-leading 89.7 percent (70 of 78) from the line. He also finished tied for fourth in the conference for steals (33) and fifth in three-pointers made. He finished ranked third all-time in the SUNYAC with an .870 free-throw shooting percentage (168-for-192).
Francois, who joined the Lakers as a transfer from SUNY Cobleskill, led the conference in rebounds with 188, averaging 11.8 per game, and ranked fifth with a .569 field-goal shooting percentage (82-for-144). He also finished 14th in scoring with a 13.6 points per game average.
Burridge is the third Oswego State player to garner Rookie of the Year accolades since the conference began awarding the honor in 1994, joining Trevon Telford in 1998, and Nick Peroli in 2004. He led the SUNYAC with 48 blocked shots (3.0 pg) and finished 16th in scoring with 12.9 points per game. He was the lone player named to the All-Tournament team of the 2009 SUNYAC Men’s Basketball Championship, averaging 21.5 points and breaking the tournament record with 12 blocked shots in two games, and tying the single-game tournament record with eight blocks in a 92-87 quarterfinal win over Potsdam.
