Kayla Ryan named second team All-SUNYAC, honored as SUNYAC Rookie of the Year
Freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) of the Oswego State women’s basketball team earned second-team accolades on the 2008-09 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All-Conference Team and was also named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, announced by the conference office on Monday, March 2.
She was the lone Oswego player named to this year’s team and the fourth to garner Rookie of the Year accolades since the conference started awarding the honor in 1993, joining Janelle Hubert (1998), Nicole Ferguson (2002), and Kelly Mraz (2004).
Ryan finished as the top rookie scorer in conference play with a 14.5 points per game average, shooting 48.2 percent (82-for-170) from the floor and 70.3 percent (64-for-91) from the free throw line in 16 games played, ranking seventh and 13th in league play, respectively. She also ranked tenth in rebounds (112), averaging 7.0 per game, and finished tied for 13th in blocked shots with eight.
Ryan was the top scorer (14.0 points pg) and rebounder (183, 7.0 pg) this season for the Lakers, who finished with an 11-15 overall record and a 9-7 mark in SUNYAC play. The team qualified for the conference tournament for the eighth straight year, losing to eventual champion College at Brockport, 66-43, in the quarterfinals.
