Laker men, women finish eighth at SUNYAC championships, Chamberlain top male rookie performer

The Oswego State indoor track and field team competed at the 2009 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Bristol Field House on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Saturday, February 28. Both the Lakers men and women’s team finished eighth in the team standings.  Freshman Mike Chamberlain (Rochester/Gates-Chili) and junior Josh Galletta (Weedsport) each scored points with top eight individual finishes for the Oswego men, who tallied 24 points, while senior Erin Kain (New York Mills) was the lone individual point scorer for the women, who totaled seven points.

Chamberlain was the top freshman performer of the meet, finishing in a three-way tie as the second leading point scorer in the field events with 15 points. He finished third in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 13.63 meters (44 feet, 8.75 inches), placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.57 meters (21 feet, 6.75 inches), and finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the high jump with a height of 1.87 meters (6 feet, 1.50 inches).

Galetta finished seventh in the finals of the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds. He qualified for the final by taking the final qualifying spot in the preliminary heats with a time of 6.71 seconds, edging out two other competitors with identical times by three one-thousandths of a second.

The remaining points came in the relays, with the Lakers finishing fifth in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:54.93 behind freshmen Pat Breen (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) and Eric Wojantik (Eden), senior Chris McAllister (Pleasant Valley/Arlington), and grad student Chris Reich (Montauk/East Hampton), and placing sixth in the 1,600-meter relay (3:36.73) with the team of juniors AJ Carapella (Baldwinsville/CW Baker) and Andy English (Central Square), senior Eric Wasacz (Saratoga Springs/Schuylerville), and Wojantik.

Kain finished eighth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.44 meters (40 feet, 5.50 inches). Senior Danielle Washington (Rome/Rome Free Academy) narrowly missed reaching the finals of the 55-meter dash, posting a preliminary time of 9.24 seconds in finishing ninth.

In the relays, the Lakers placed fifth in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:13.78 behind the team of freshmen Lindsey Forte (Marietta/Marcellus) and Christine Ripple (Johnstown), senior Renee Coe (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley), and junior Megan Boggan (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy).  Coe also ran a leg on the distance medley relay, teaming with junior Rose Foran (Canastota), and freshmen Khrystyne Tschinkel (Freehold/Greenville) and Lorely Gomez (Glen Cove) in finishing seventh with a time of 13:50.78.

The Lakers will compete at the ECAC Division III Championships on March 5-6 at Tufts University in Medford, MA.
