Ithaca wins second ECWC title behind four champions, Oswego's Smith qualifies for NCAA tournament for third straight year

Ithaca College crowned four individuals champions and had three other wrestlers finishing among the top three to successfully defend their team title at the 18th annual Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference championships, hosted by Oswego State on Saturday, February 21 at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Bombers, who got individual titles from Seth Ecker (125 pounds), Chad Winowich (133), David Priest (174), and Chris Carabello (197), compiled 143.5 points, outistancing runner-up SUNY Cortland, who tallied 113 points with two individual champions (Paul LeBlanc at 149 and Joe Murphy at 285).  Messiah College and Lycoming College finished tied for third place with 72 points, each coming away with an individual champion (Messiah’s Craig Gin at 157, Chris Dahlheimer of Lycoming at 165), while Rochester Institute of Technology placed fifth with 52 points and one champion, 141 pounder Luke Baum, who was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Oneonta State (51 points), which brought home an individual champion in Josh Wake at 184 pounds, The College at Brockport (44.5), and host Oswego State (41.5) rounded out the standings, finishing fifth through eighth, respectively.

Oswego senior Derrick Smith (Mexico) finished second at 141 pounds, but garnered a “wild card” entry into the NCAA Division III Championships, marking his third consecutive championship appearance. Smith was one of five wild card qualifiers, selected by the championship selection committee. joining Ithaca’s trio of John Paxos, Blane Wosczak, and Willie Horvath, and Mike McInally of RIT, along with the ten individual champions at the NCAA championship tournament on March 6-7 at the US Cellular Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
