Lakers post more personal best and qualifying performance at St. Lawrence
The Oswego State men’s and women’s indoor Track and field teams saw eight individuals produce SUNYAC qualifying marks, and had a relay team produce a school-record and ECAC Division III qualifying effort in its second meet of the season at the St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays in Canton, NY.
Freshman Mike Chamberlain won two events and finished second in another to pace the Laker men, which had five individuals meet SUNYAC Championship qualifying standards. Chamberlain captured the triple jump with a leap of 13.25 meters (43 feet, 5.75 inches), bettering his conference qualifying mark from a week ago. Freshman Paul Crockett registered a SUNYAC qualifying mark in the event with a third-place performance, recording a leap of 12.35 meters (40-6.25), and also finished fifth in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds.
Chamberlain also won the high jump with a height of 1.82 meters (5-11.50), and placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.18 meters (20-3.50), heading a group of three Oswego competitors to finish in the top ten in the event. Sophomore Owen Gayzur finished third with a distance of 5.96 meters (19-6.75), while classmate Mike Donnellan placed seventh with a mark of 5.43 meters (17-9.75).
Oswego posted top ten finishes in six field events on the day. Freshman Sean Bereza produced a personal best and a SUNYAC qualifying mark in his collegiate debut in the shot put, finishing fourth with a toss of 12.18 meters (39-11.50). Junior Chris Bly placed sixth in the event with a throw of 10.83 meters, and finished seventh in the 35-pound weight toss with a distance of 10.89 meters, while freshman Frank Risole placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 3.55 meters.
In the running events, Juniors Andy English and A.J. Carapella set new indoor personal bests and recorded SUNYAC qualifying times the 400-meter dash. English placed sixth with a time of 52.32 seconds, while Carapella finished ninth with a time of and a 52.64 seconds.
Later in the day, English and Carapella teamed with classmate Dave Ginannino and sophomore Anthony Radju to post a runner-up finish in the 4 x 200-meter relay, setting a new school record and qualifying for the ECAC Division III Championships in March with a time of 1:34.39. English also ran the anchor leg of Oswego’s 4 x 400-meter relay, joining sophomore Mark Teets, Gayzur, and Risole in finishing fifth with a time of 3:44.93.
Junior Geoff Kubuszewski reached the finals of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing sixth with a time of 6.89 seconds. He turned in his SUNYAC qualifying time in the preliminaries with a time of 6.86 seconds.
The Laker women recorded top ten finishes in ten events, with three individuals reaching the SUNYAC qualifying standard. Seniors Erin Kain and Danielle Washington were the top performers for the Laker women with top five finishes in their respective events. Kain registered a third-place finish in the 20-pound weight toss with a throw of 12.73 meters (41 feet, 9.25 inches), while Washington was the runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 9.39 meters (30-9.75). Washington also advanced to the finals in the 55-meter hurdles, placing seventh with a time of 9.66 seconds.
Junior Megan Bogan and freshman Khyrstine Tschinkel advanced to the finals of the 55-meter dash, finishing seventh (:07.87) and eighth (:08.00) respectively. Both runners turned in SUNYAC qualifying times in the preliminary heats, Bogan posting a time of 7.84 seconds, while Tschinkel turning in a time of 7.89 seconds. Freshman Christine Ripple missed reaching the finals, but also established a SUNYAC qualifying time in the prelims with a time of 7.96 seconds.
The trio of Tschinkel, Bogan, and Ripple teamed with freshman Samantha Williamson to post a fourth-place finish in the 4 x 200-meter relay, turning in a time of 1:55.24.
Other individuals producing top-ten finishes were freshman Jennifer Culp (6th, 9.63 meters) and Elizabeth Weatherby (8th, 9.57 meters) in the shot put, and junior Erin Santere (9th, 3.83 meters) and freshman Amy Cuevas (10th, 3.81 meters) in the long jump.
