Lakers produce several qualifying performances in season-opening meet
Junior sprinter Josh Galletta established a new school record in the 60-meter dash and senior Erin Kain posted a personal best in the 20-pound weight throw as the Oswego State indoor track and field team opened its 2008-09 season on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Cornell University Relays.
A total of 11 SUNYAC qualifying performances and four personal-bests were established during the one-day meet, which featured New York State teams from all NCAA Divisions and junior colleges.
Galetta ran a SUNYAC qualifying time of 7.26 seconds in the preliminary heats of the 60-meter dash, breaking the old record of 7.31 seconds set in the same meet a year ago. Galetta also registered a SUNYAC and ECAC qualifying mark in the long jump, finishing fifth in a field of 20 competitors with the second-best leap in school history at 6.65 meters (21 feet, 10 inches), missing the school record by .05 meters. He was the top NCAA Division III finisher in the event.
Freshman Mike Chamberlain established SUNYAC qualifying performances in the long jump and the triple jump. He finished 13th in the long jump with a leap of 6.27 meters (20-7) and placed 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 12.66 meters.
Senior Andy English (1:09.27) and sophomore Mark Teets (1:13.98) each established personal best
in the 500-meter dash, while junior A.J. Carapella posted a personal best and the second fastest time in school history with a time of :37.26 in the 300-meter dash.
Among the Laker women, Kain finished fifth in a field of 18 competitors, and second among Division III athletes, in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 12.85 meters (42 ft., 2 inches). Junior Janelle Wilcox and sophomore Liz Weatherby also posted SUNYAC qualifying performances in the event with throws of 11.83 meters and 11.62 meters, respectively.
Other individuals registering SUNYAC qualifying performances were junior Megan Boggan (:08.42) and freshman Christine Ripple (:08.56) in the 60-meter dash; and senior Danielle Washington (;10.22) and Ripple (:10.39) in the 60-meter hurdles.
Oswego will compete in its final meet before the semester break at the St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays on Saturday, Dec. 13.
