Armstong, Felder win titles at NYS Championships

Seniors Heidi Armstrong and Shomari Felder placed first at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championships over the weekend, as the meet was held at the University of Rochester.

Armstrong repeated as the javelin champion and provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet by throwing a season’s best 39.25 meters. Armstrong also placed fifth in the shot put.

Shomari won the high jump championship with a 1.93m jump, one week after winning the high jump crown at the SUNYAC Championship.

Other highlights from the weekend saw Megan Boggan finish third overall in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.65). Oswego State’s women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team (Jamie Finnegan, Boggan, Janell Dutchess and Julie McCloskey) finished just out of scoring in that event with a time of 51.86 seconds and the 4 x 400 meter relay team (Boggan, McCloskey, Renee Coe, and Dutchess) was just off the school record with a time of 4:10.60.

For the men, Josh Galletta finished seventh in the long jump (6.21 meters). Max Fiedler finished eighth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.11 seconds, a college personal record, that also improved his ECAC standing. The men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of Galletta, A.J. Carapella, Fiedler, and Anthony Raju was seventh overall with a season’s best time of 43.95 seconds and the men’s 4 x 400 relay team of Eric Wasacz, Joey Pekarek, Andy English, and Fiedler all ran outstanding legs with a season’s best time of 3:26.47, qualifying for ECACs.

A select amount of Lakers will compete Thursday at Roberts Wesleyan as a tune-up and last chance qualifier for the ECAC meet.
