PERFORMANCE: Melody of China
Waterman Theatre, Tyler Hall
Melody of China is the premiere Chinese music ensemble based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The ensemble has a two-fold mission: to promote classical and contemporary Chinese music, and provide quality entertanment through the synergy between an ancient cultural tradition and a youthful American culture. The concert will include guest appearances by selected student musicians.

Bernstein is known for his clean, warm guitar tone and his lyrical melodic lines. Throughout the 1990s he was at the forefront of contemporary jazz and has played with such notables as Joshua Redman, Melvin Rhyne, Diana Krall, Larry Goldings and many others.

Samuel Barber was an American composer of orchestral, opera, and choral and piano music. He is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, and was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music, for his opera Vanessa (1956-57) and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1962). Also widely performed is his Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (1947), a work for soprano and orchestra, which sets a prose text by James Agee.
Soprano Julia Broxholm has a career that spans opera to Broadway, oratorio to vocal chamber music, and recitalist to recording artist. Her operatic roles have included Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, the title role in Floyd's Susannah, Susanna in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Norina in Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Musetta in Puccini's La Boheme.

Together, they have collaborated as duo parnas for fifteen years, winning first prize in international chamber music competition at Carnegie Hall, releasing two internationally acclaimed CDs, and earning rave reviews in The New York Times.

Known worldwide for transcending the limits of tradition, the string quartet ETHEL aggressively and joyfullty adapts their skills to music of every style and description. Recognized as one of "The New Guitar Gods" by Rolling Stone, Kaki King is known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, energetic live shows, use of multiple tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar, and her enormous ability in a variety of genres. Together these celebrated sound worlds intermingle in an inspired collaboration.
