This exhibit is complemented by an exhibit of student work that responds to – and is inspired by – Crossing the BLVD. It is an evolving and changing space, so plan to visit often.

AUTHOR: Moustafa Bayoumi "Thinking About 9/11 Ten Years After"
LeMoyne College
Author of How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? Being Young and Arab in America (Penguin), Bayoumi will serve as the keynote speaker. His writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, The Guardian, The National, CNN.com, The London Review of Books, the Nation, and other places. Bayoumi is also the Co-editor of The Edward Said Reader (Vintage) and editor of Midnight on Mavi Marmara: the Attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and How It Changed the Course of the Israel/Palestine Conflict(O/R Books). He has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Sun-Times, and on CNN, FOX News, Book TV, National Public Radio, and many other media outlets from around the world. Panel discussions on How Does It Feel To Be a Problem? have been convened at The Museum of the City of New York, PEN American Center, Drexel Law School, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Bayoumi is a professor of English at Brooklyn College, Ciy University of New York. He Lives in Brooklyn, NY.

PANIC 48-HOUR FILM FESTIVAL Begins Panic
Campus Center Auditorium
The Oswego Film Club hosts a 48-hour film competition for teams of 5 people. The film festival competition segment begins Wednesday, September 28 at 6 PM and ends Friday, September 30 at 6 PM. Each team creates, shoots and edits a horror film within a 48-hour deadline. Screening of the completed films takes place Sunday, October 2. Films are eligible for awards, including Best Picture, Audience Choice and Best Actor. Entry Fee: $5 per team member.

Facilitated by Rev. Tiffany Steinwert in cooperation with the Syracuse University Interfaith Council and InterFaith Works
A dialogue is coupled with a sampling of music by one of Pakistan’s esteemed qawwali ensembles. This is part of an extended residency hosted by ARTSwego at SUNY Oswego that is entitled Caravanserai. It is a program launched by Arts Midwest on behalf of U.S. Regional Arts Organizations with support form the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. This program is also linked to President Obama’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge in which both Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego participating.

PERCUSSION WORKSHOP: Tari Khan Ensemble
Room 40, Tyler Hall
In this hands-on workshop U.S.-based tabla master, Ustad Tari Khan demonstrates the use of the tabla, a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres that are played with extensive use of the fingers and palms in such a way as to become a virtual voice. Khan has been crowned the "Tabla Prince of Pakistan" and has received some of Pakistan's most prestigious awards. He is joined by dholi drummers who perform on a double-sided barrel drum that dates back to the 15th century and that is commonly associated with Punjabi music that forms the basis for modern-day Bhangra music.

IRISH FILMMAKER: George Clarke

Presented by the Oswego Film Club
Clarke, an independent filmmaker from Northern Ireland, will be visiting our college! His film, Battle of the Bone quickly became a cult classic after winning the Audience Choice Award at the Freak Show Film Festival in Florida in 2008. As rival mobs battle it out on the streets of Belfast, three friends are caught in the middle and have to contend not only with the rioters but a horde of marauding zombies. He plans to talk about film making in Ireland and possibly screen his newest release The Last Light.

In this hands-on workshop students ages 12-18 gain an appreciation for percussion music from Pakistan and India. Led by U.S.-based tabla master, Ustad Tari Khan who demonstrates the use of the tabla, a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. Joined by two drummers using a dholi, a double-sided barrel drum that dates back to the 15th century. Bring any percussion instrument (a large coffee can works). A variety of percussion instruments will also be on hand.

Grief & Gratitude: A Celebration of Kathy Budd’s Art
Tyler Art Gallery
A celebration of SUNY Oswego Assistant Professor of Art Kathy Budd's life and career as a teacher and artist, which includes her work and that of her former students. Kathy's scholarly work focused on such social justice issues as the relationship between capitalism and work culture, labor trends in the working class and professions and the effects of gender, class and race on work experience. Guest-curated by artist, colleague and friend Haleh Niazmand.

Juan Perdiguero: Animalidad
Perdiguero’s mixed media works are innovative ways of drawing that merge with photography in images classical in appearance but strongly contemporary in the way they are conceptualized and rendered. His realistic representations of animals are intertwined with abstract and surreal landscapes of photo pictorial marks that try to psychologically and emotionally engage the viewer.

Julieve Jubin: Centro Habana 2011

Inspired and moved by everyday Cuban citizens while on a research visit for an upcoming SUNY Oswego Travel Photography course, Jubin documents the Cuban people in detailed and vibrant color photographs. Says Jubin, "...Cuban society, while burdened by the many social and political restrictions, poverty, and scarcity of goods, manages to endure and shine amidst the persistent hardships and ruins of political struggle."

TALK: Alida Perez (From Guatemala)

Alida Perez is a Kakchikel Maya from San Antonio Aguas Calientes in Guatemala.

She is a spokesperson for Maya people and meets with political and economic leaders  around the globe to advocate for the indigenous peoples of Guatemala. She has founded a non-profit organization called Artisanos Unidos to promote fair trade in indigenous crafts and to market those crafts around the world. A master weaver herself, Ms. Perez is also the founder and director of a textile museum in Antigua, Guatemala, called Museo Casa del Tejido Antiquo, that preserves fine examples of Maya weaving and educates the public about Maya weaving history, techniques, and styles. She speaks about the significance of Maya weaving and its symbols, using actual textiles as examples.

In the late 70’s, Hip Hop was born and evolved into the four classic elements of graffiti, DJing, breakdancing, and rapping, eventually enhanced by a fifth element called 'Beatboxing', which imitated drum rhythms with the mouth - creating the term 'Human Beatbox'.

Soprano Elisabeth Kisselstein and pianist Rebecca Horning collaborate to celebrate favorite composers of the Twentieth-Century. Repertoire includes numerous American compositions including Libby Larsen’s Try Me, Good King, Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, and Copland’s 12 Poems of Emily Dickenson.

In developing his work, Rajeckas is gifted at mining character narratives to find comedic moments; often finding humor in the context of horror; and drudging up fears and then using comedy as a way to help audiences deal with them.

A popular 16-year-old jock is brutally attacked for coming out. His mother reaches out for help to the only person she feels she can trust, an openly gay man. Filmmaker Joe Wilson documents the harrowing but ultimately successful battle waged against recalcitrant school authorities, the efforts of a lesbian couple to restore an historic theater in the face of vitriolic anti-gay attacks and his own unexpected friendship with an Evangelical preacher. Followed by Q&A with the directors.
