Back on Air

Alumnus Returns to Oswego, Launches Community Radio Site

Marv Kaminsky '78

After more than 20 years away, Marv Kaminsky ’78 is back in Oswego with a new online radio project.

“I got here when I was 17 and I loved this city,” he said. “I really always considered it home.”

As a communication studies major, Kaminsky put in time at WOCR-AM and WRVO-FM on campus as well WSGO-AM -- a gig that classmate Al Roker ’76 recommended to him -- in the city of Oswego. For the past three months or so, he has produced news and feature segments for his own RadioOswego.com.

The installments known as podcasts can be streamed online or taken anywhere on an MP3 player.

The inspiration for Radio Oswego, though, had little to do with technological advancement. It’s actually rooted in an old-school concept.

Kaminsky was motivated by his childhood experience with the dial and the fading concept of “local radio,” which has suffered from years of consolidation, today.

“I think it’s a personal, wonderful way of communication,” Kaminsky said of radio. “A person on the radio isn’t just talking into the air, he’s talking to you."

Radio Oswego isn’t Kaminsky’s first foray into Internet radio. In 2005 he created the podcast "Mr. Nice Guy Show", a news and pop culture commentary that he actually began as a program on WSGO.

LibVibe
, another podcast project, provided weekly library news and insight for about two years. Kaminsky has had jobs in sales and as a librarian since leaving Oswego, a place he fondly recognizes as a springboard for his career.

“It was very pragmatic; it was very hands-on,” he said. “It was not just the classroom talk and chalk.”

Oswego State gave Kaminsky his passion for information and sharing it with the world, he said. In addition to his daily news and weather forecasts, the Radio Oswego founder also includes a lighter feature called “What Makes Today So Special” as well as pieces about health, science and even civic softball updates.
