This fall SUNY Oswego’s Metro
Center in downtown Syracuse will begin offering an event
planning certificate program.
Courses will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. for four consecutive
Tuesdays, Sept. 15 to Oct. 6. Students who successfully complete the program
will receive a SUNY Oswego professional certificate in event planning.
Instructors Bill Motto and Joe LaGuardia will teach key
strategies for managing event logistics including volunteers, facilities,
transportation, food and beverage, ticketing and admissions. The seasoned
professionals, who are partners in Motto
LaGuardia Consultants, will lead students through the intricacies of event
management by using a combination of lectures, interactive activities and
real-life experiences.
“We will teach the students how to develop critical planning
techniques such as setting benchmarks and planning for contingencies,” Motto
said. “Students will also learn how to establish bases for negotiating
contracts, deal with sponsors and work with a variety of events.
“This will be a fun, fast-paced program which we think will
suit the caliber of people who will be interested in this certificate program,”
he said.
Motto is a business owner, community leader, educator,
coach, event/tournament director and consultant who has more than 30 years of
experience running successful business, community, college and sports
organizations and programs. He has been involved in a number of organizations,
including serving as president of the Syracuse Sports Corp. for the past 17
years.
For 32 years, LaGuardia was director of marketing for the
New York State Fair, one of the largest and most successful fairs in the
country. During his tenure, his skills as a marketer and promoter helped lead
the state fair to record attendance.
