The women's studies program at SUNY Oswego will celebrate an important milestone this year. The program will mark the 30th anniversary of its founding with a year-long series of events focusing on women and gender issues.

The celebration will kick off Sept. 17 with a reception from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Chu Atrium at the Campus Center. It will be open to the public free of charge, but reservations are needed by Sept. 12.

"This will be an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the program in women's studies and the 30 years since the minor was founded," said Women's Studies Director Lisa Langlois. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the "Women Aloud" scholarship fundraiser and the 10th anniversary of the women's studies major.

Also on tap Sept. 17 will be an open house at the new Women's Studies Office and the Interdisciplinary Programs and Activities Center.

Speakers at the event will include President Deborah F. Stanley, Provost Susan Coultrap-McQuin and interim Dean of Arts and Sciences Rhonda Mandel.

Langlois said many of the founding members of the women's studies program will return to campus for the event, including former Dean Barb Gerber, History Professor Emerita Judy Wellman, Communications Studies Professor Emerita Joan Loveridge-Sanbonmatsu and former Librarian Nancy Osborne '70.

She added that holding the event in the Chu Atrium was particularly appropriate. The late Librarian Sylvia Chu and her husband, Sociology Professor James Chu, bequeathed $300,000 to the college to name the space. Sylvia Chu was a strong proponent of women's studies at Oswego.

After the reception, attendees will be invited to the Campus Center auditorium to hear ALANA Conference speaker, poet Jackie Warren-Moore '74.
