Mascot Mission

Grassroots Group Wants Unified ID

Pucky petered. The Oswegull is gone. Will the next mascot be moot?

Greg Aiello ’10 sure hopes not. Since last spring, the education major has been rallying students, faculty and administration behind a drive to bring a Laker likeness to life.

What started as a pitch to the Student Association has grown into an initiative involving the entire campus community. That broad support will be the key to caricature success, Aiello said.

“The last piece of that puzzle before we can take it to the next step would be the alumni,” he said.

So far, about two dozen images have been collected, including his own concept that he used to pitch the mascot mission to the Student Association in spring. With the help of SA Sen. Latasha Archer ’09 and Dean of Students James Scharfenberger, Aiello has been collecting opinions through forums and a Facebook page.

Before the ideas are narrowed and a consultant hired, Aiello wants thoughts — even submissions — from alumni.

“Whatever reaction that they have is invaluable,” he said. “Ideas, opinions, criticism — it’s all gold to me.”

Alumni can offer feedback or submit ideas to Aiello directly before Nov. 18.
