Erik Roberson '07 graduated from Oswego State in the spring, but left a positive example of sportsmanship for all Laker student-athletes to follow. He was recently recognized as a conference winner of the NCAA Sportsmanship Award.
One male and one female student-athlete from each conference are eligible to be nominated, and Roberson was chosen as the male student-athlete from the State University of New York Athletic Conference.
The award stated, "In keeping with the Association's desire to promote sportsmanship and ethical behavior and the highest ideals of respect, caring, civility, fairness, honesty, integrity and responsibility, the NCAA recognizes Erik Roberson."
Erik was a four-year member of the Oswego State men's basketball team and finished his career ranked 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 870 points. As a senior, he earned All-SUNYAC Honorable Mention recognition.
"Once you become a part of this program, it seems that the main thing is that everyone strives for excellence in everything we do. There's a sense of dignity and doing the right thing instilled in all of us by the coaching staff, and that's one thing that I'll always remember," Roberson said of his years as a member of the Oswego State men's basketball team, where he played for head coach Kevin Broderick M '92.
Roberson is a native of Buffalo and attended City Honors before enrolling at Oswego State, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications. Erik is currently serving as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team at Medaille College.
"Erik earned this award by treating officials, opponents, teammates, and coaches with respect and class in all of his four years," Broderick said. "Each year he was here he earned an expanded role on the team, and regardless of his role he always had a positive attitude. By his senior year he was one of the best guards in the SUNYAC and an outstanding team leader."
The Oswego State men's basketball team opens its season on Nov. 16 against Hobart in the Max Ziel Tournament at Laker Hall in Oswego.
