Rudy's. Bev's. Wonton House?
That's right.
Oswego's lakefront eateries have been joined by an alumni-owned addition that promises to take college late nights to another level.
On April 21, Yuan He '02, M '06 and Jason Shi '07 celebrated the grand opening of the newest Asian restaurant in Oswego, the Wonton House. It is conveniently located right next to campus at the former site of Johnny's Dockside, next to Rudy's.
While the new restaurant differs greatly from the current establishments along county Route 89, the Wonton House intends to offer something no other Oswego restaurants currently provide.
"We will deliver until 3 a.m. on weekdays and until 4 a.m. on weekends when college is in session," Shi said.
He and Shi are products of Oswego's School of Business. They feel their business tactics are sound, and Shi is no stranger to this line of work.
"I grew up in the restaurant business," Shi said, "My father has been assisting us, and has been a big help."
Shi also benefited from opening one of Oswego's Reading Initiative books: Fast Food Nation.
"When I came to Oswego, it was one of the first books I read," Shi said. "I learned a lot from that book, especially about Ray Kroc."
Kroc, the founder of the McDonald's empire, found ways to offer customers exactly what they wanted at a conveniently low price. Shi and He intend to employ this tactic on a much smaller scale by creating a menu featuring food that students will greatly enjoy at a much lower price -- similar to McDonald's dollar menu.
Despite being a new business in a tough economy, the entrepreneurs feel they've made a good investment in Oswego, which they consider a very special place.
"I just love the sunsets here," Shi said. "Oswego offers us a great opportunity here. It's a dream come true."
